MACHINES
(TOPIC: ENERGISERS)
Instructions
STUDENTS FORM GROUPS OF 6-8.
THE TEACHER COMES UP WITH A (REAL OR INVENTED) MACHINE- EG BULLDOZER, DISHWASHER, UFO. THE STUDENTS MAKE THE MACHINE; EVERY STUDENT BECOMES A PART OF THE MACHINE.
WE WANT TO SEE/HEAR THE MACHINE WORK.
VARIATIONS
TELL THE STUDENTS THE MACHINE GOES INTO OVERDRIVE, UNTIL IT EXPLODES. OR TELL THE STUDENTS THE POWER’S OUT, AND THE MACHINE SLOWLY GRINDS TO A HALT.
ANOTHER VARIATION IS THAT IT CAN BE DONE AS A WHOLE CLASS ACTIVITY, WHEREBY EVERYONE MUST BE INVOLVED. BEST TO ENCOURAGE A 2 MINUTE DISCUSSION FIRST, BEFORE THE STUDENTS LAUNCH INTO ACTION FOR THIS VARIATION.
DEBRIEF: TALK ABOUT BUILDING ON THE IDEAS OF OTHERS IN GROUPS RATHER THAN TAKING OVER. EMBRACING THE IDEAS OF OTHERS AND BUILDING ON THEM, RATHER THAN REJECTING THEM OR PUSHING THEIR OWN IDEAS. INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE IDEA OF “YES-AND”ING- ACCEPT EVERYTHING SAID AND/OR DONE AND DO SOMETHING WITH IT.
