Rationale

Having a sense of belonging and feeling connected socially are vital for wellbeing. It leads to higher self esteem, greater life satisfaction, lower levels of stress, less mental illness and longer life (Smith, 2017). Good relationships take time and energy to develop and maintain, but are well worth the effort. When we genuinely show others respect and appreciation we are meeting a basic need and helping them flourish (Fredrickson, 2013). As we near the end of the year, we have a wonderful opportunity to let someone know that we have noticed them do something we respect or appreciate. This will not only benefit the person you offer a shout out too, but increase your wellbeing too.

Description of Personal Wellbeing Practice: Shout Out’s

  1. Think of a time this year that someone in the room has done something that you respected or appreciated. It can be big or small. Think about what they did and why you admired that action and how it made you feel.

  2. Write it down.

  3. We are now going to give you the opportunity to share your “Shout out” with the group. Be sure to look at the person and use their name.

Main message:

“Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.” — Voltaire

UPP’s Personal Wellbeing Practices

A Personal Wellbeing Practice (PWP) is an evidenced-based positive psychology intervention, applied in school communities or other educational settings. At UPP, we have tried to make these PWP’s simple, concise and relevant for students and their teachers. The six elements for the Personal Wellbeing Practices are: Positive emotion (P); Engagement (E); Relationships (R); Meaning (M); Accomplishment (A); and, Health (H).

We hope that these evidence-based tools of positive psychology will enhance help people to thrive and live their best life, both within and beyond the school gates.
