Rationale

It is well documented that there are many benefits to practising gratitude. The expression of gratitude is associated with happiness, wellbeing, life satisfaction, optimism, forgiveness, enthusiasm and love (Emmons, 2007). Sharing and acknowledging what we are grateful for is one of the most powerful of all positive psychology tools. Research has found it to increase happiness and decrease depressive symptoms for up to six months (Seligman et al, 2005).

Description of Personal Wellbeing Practice: Sharing our grateful moments with others

  1. Think about a moment in your life that you are grateful for. It can be big or small.

  2. Share this moment with your elbow partner. Explain how it made you feel and why it happened.

  3. Practice active listening while your partner shares. Ask them one follow-up question about their moment, and invite them to share a little more.

Main message:

“Happiness is the only thing that multiplies when you share it.” — Albert Schweitzer

UPP’s Personal Wellbeing Practices

A Personal Wellbeing Practice (PWP) is an evidenced-based positive psychology intervention, applied in school communities or other educational settings. At UPP, we have tried to make these PWP’s simple, concise and relevant for students and their teachers. The six elements for the Personal Wellbeing Practices are: Positive emotion (P); Engagement (E); Relationships (R); Meaning (M); Accomplishment (A); and, Health (H).

We hope that these evidence-based tools of positive psychology will enhance help people to thrive and live their best life, both within and beyond the school gates.
