Meaning

Teachers to read and facilitate the following:

Rationale

Research has uncovered that meaning can be found through many paths which include: Having a sense of belonging; having a purpose that motivates us to serve others; having a story to help us make sense of our place in the world and having experiences that lift us above the everyday and connect us to something bigger (Smith, 2017). Meaning and purpose usually surface over time, however spending time thinking about what you want your meaning in life to be, can help guide you in the right direction. We also need to step back from the daily details and look at the bigger picture in a positive way- this can ignite a sense of hope and pull us into action (Kern & McQuaid, 2017).

Description of Personal Wellbeing Practice: Live your Legacy

  1. As a class, brainstorm some positive values, personal characteristics and contributions to humanity that would make a positive difference in the world.

  2. Imagine that one day after you have passed, one of your grandchildren asks about you and your life.

  3. Write a brief summary of how you would personally like to be remembered and described, using some values, personal characteristics and contributions to humanity that really stand out for you.

  4. Your challenge for this week is to try to live with that sense of meaning and purpose straight away. Start living your legacy now.

UPP’s Personal Wellbeing Practices

A Personal Wellbeing Practice (PWP) is an evidenced-based positive psychology intervention, applied in school communities or other educational settings. At UPP, we have tried to make these PWP’s simple, concise and relevant for students and their teachers. The six elements for the Personal Wellbeing Practices are: Positive emotion (P); Engagement (E); Relationships (R); Meaning (M); Accomplishment (A); and, Health (H).

We hope that these evidence-based tools of positive psychology will enhance help people to thrive and live their best life, both within and beyond the school gates.
