PEER MENTORS

A WORKSHOP FOR STUDENT MENTORS

Our "Peer Mentors" Workshop is designed for your peer mentors / peer support team who are most likely in year 10 or year 11. It provides training to students who have been entrusted with the responsibility of mentoring younger students in formal and informal ways. It will equip older students with the skills to work as big sisters / big brothers / mentors / buddies / peer support for younger students. In this workshop, peer mentors are equipped to build rapport with their friends, peers and also younger students. They will develop listening and problem-solving skills, communication skills and leadership skills. It is usually a 2 day workshop, but can be adapted to a one day format as needed.

The Peer Mentors Workshop is ideal for those schools who are looking to develop greater leadership capacity in older students, while simultaneously helping younger students develop positive connections and social support at school. This builds school community and spirit. The Peer Mentors workshop supports the mental health of young people across the school by teaching problem-solving skills and building engagement and connections among students.

It can be helpful for: leadership development, social skills development, school transition and community building.

TWO DAY OUTLINE

  • MAKING THE SHIFT TO MENTOR- responsibilities of being an effective mentor, building relational bank accounts, setting an example by living “above the line”.

  • STRENGTHENING CONNECTIONS- how to listen and respond actively and how to use empathy as a mentor of younger students. Study the tools of protective interrupting, while discovering how to be an upstander not a bystander.

  • PROBLEM SOLVING- be equipped to problem solve using Michael Pohl’s POOCH model and put the model into action through group activities.

  • COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY AS A MENTOR- this session equips mentors with a short series of fun, team activities that they will be able to lead for large groups in their own context while also teaching the verbal and non-verbal skills required to communicate effectively.

  • LEADING LARGE GROUPS- this session equips mentors with the skills to lead large groups through various activities, by using the behaviour leading methods and principles that the UPP team uses everyday to lead large group workshops.

  • PRACTICE MAKES PROGRESS- providing an opportunity for students to apply what they have learned in small groups, by demonstrating the use of verbal and non-verbal skills, behaviour teaching. This session helps mentors plot a way forward to apply what they have learned over two days of the Peer Mentors Workshop.
