DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP CAPACITY -
LESSON 3:
EVERYDAY LEADERSHIP
NOTES
MAKE SURE THE STUDENTS STICK TO THE ORIGINAL GESTURE/SOUND, AND DON’T JUST DO THEIR OWN THING. WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE THE MOVEMENT GROW ORGANICALLY.
DEBRIEF: DISCUSS THE NEED TO WATCH AND OBSERVE OTHERS. SOMETIMES WE NEED TO BE GOOD FOLLOWERS. WERE WE CONSIDERATE OF THE PEOPLE THAT WERE COMING AFTER US, OR DID WE MAKE IT HARD FOR THEM (BY EXAGGERATING TOO MUCH)? DID I MAKE IT ALL ABOUT ME (STUDENTS TO THINK ABOUT THEIR OWN ACTIONS)? HOW CAN WE ENSURE WE SUPPORT AND MAKE THINGS BETTER FOR THE PEOPLE AROUND US IN OUR LIVES?
PART 1- INTRODUCTION
Learning objectives
By the end of this lesson, learners should:
make a small leadership commitment
PART 2- DISCUSSION- (10 MINUTES)
Students are to complete the following questions in the workbook. Then teachers to facilitate discussion.
Q1. Who would you consider to be the best leader in the world today? Why?
Q2. Who do they influence? Are they having a positive or negative impact on the world?
Q3. Is it possible to be a talented leader, with a negative impact / influence? Can you think of any examples?
Q4. Who are the people that have the greatest impact on your character and behaviour?
PART 3- WATCH AND DISCUSS- (10 MINUTES)
We have all changed someone's life -- usually without even realizing it. In this funny talk, Drew Dudley calls on all of us to celebrate leadership as the everyday act of improving each other's lives.
DISCUSS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS AS A CLASS: When was the last time you showed your appreciation for something good that you noticed someone else do or say?
Leadership is not about big, huge things that change people's lives on the spot. It is about everyday actions you can take that lift other people up, or have a small (or large) positive impact on them.
PART 4 - REFLECTION- (10 MINUTES)
Teachers invite students to reflect on the questions below in the space provided in their workbook. Then facilitate a class discussion and give students the opportunity to share their thoughts.
Who are your actions influencing and impacting?
How can you demonstrate leadership, everyday?
People will remember you for the character you display each day. How do you want to be remembered when you leave this school?
PART 5- HUMAN KNOT- (10 MINUTES)
Get into groups of 8-10 in your class. Watch the clip below which explains the task and then have some fun with this activity.
TEACHERS: There is a need for communication, teamwork, positive influence, respect and encouragement. At the end of the activity (when all groups are finished, or after a set time) teachers can debrief base on the qualities needed for success in this activity. It could also be worth noting that sometimes (it is quite rare, but it can happen) teams who have not successfully completed the task, have still been able to function well as a team, and vice versa. Were there any teams like this?
